Gjögur
Westfjords

Gjögur (GJR)

Gjögur is a remote village in the municipality of Árneshreppur. Some say it's the gateway to the northern most parts of the Westfjords. 50 people live in the rural area of Árneshreppur, which makes it the least populated municipality in Iceland. With more tourists visiting the area over the summer months, it's gets livelier and many people settle there for the season. Extreme weather conditions and impassable roads make it hard for people to travel there over the winter.

Gjögur is an old fishing station and many ships sailed from there for shark fishing. Sometimes there were as many as 15 ships in Gjögur at the same time. At Gjögur there is a pier, an airport and a weather station.

From Gjögur you can explore the northern most glaciers in Iceland, go birdwatching, sail along the shore, and even visit Hornstandir nature reserve. Due to the vast lands and rurality of the area it's also the perfect place to find peace and quiet.

Norlandair has 2 scheduled flights between Reykjavík and Gjögur per week. For further information see our flight schedule.
