Grímsey North Iceland
Grímsey (GRY)
Grímsey is an island located 40 km north of Iceland. It's a part of the municipality of Akureyri and has a population of 60 people. One of the main reasons tourists visit the island is because it's nestled across the Arctic Circle. In 2017 a giant metal ball called „Orbus et Globus“ was planted where the Artic Circle goes through the island. Every year the ball must be moved to align to the Arctic Circle and one day it will end up in the ocean.
Grímsey is not only known for it's location but also it's wealth of birdlife. Every summer millions of birds occupy the island and one of the most popular species is the Puffin. The ocean surrounding the island is rich of fish, and lack of mice, rats and mink makes the island a perfect place for birds to lay their eggs. The best time of year for birdwatching is between May and September.
Norlandair has 2-3 scheduled flights to Grímsey per week. For further information see our flight schedule.
